How solar panel installation works in the UK.
The complete process — what happens, who does what, and how long each stage realistically takes. No jargon, no surprises.
- 1
Quick online quote
You answer 5 questions about your property type, roof, monthly bill and postcode. We match you with MCS-certified installers actively quoting in your area. No salespeople ringing yet — we send you the indicative price band by email or text.
- 2
Free home survey
An installer visits your home, surveys your roof's pitch, orientation and any shading, and checks your fuse board and consumer unit. You'll talk through your daily energy use, whether you're considering a battery, and where the inverter will live. You get a fixed-price written quote at the end — no obligation.
- 3
Sign and schedule
If you want to proceed, you sign the contract — usually digitally — and pay a deposit (typically 10–25%). The installer books your install date and orders panels, inverter and (if specified) battery. Lead times vary by installer and equipment, but most homes are scheduled within 2–6 weeks.

Installation
Scaffolding goes up first thing. Panels are mounted, the inverter is wired in, the consumer unit gets a new circuit, and (if you have one) the battery is positioned and commissioned. Most residential installs are done in a day; a battery or larger system runs to two. All work is MCS-certified with NICEIC-signed electrics.
- 5
Commissioning & handover
The installer commissions your system, runs you through the inverter app or monitor, hands over your MCS certificate, electrical certificate (EIC), and warranty paperwork. From that point on, your panels are generating — and you're using your own electricity directly.

Smart Export Guarantee setup
Once your G99 connection notification is on file with your DNO, you can apply for a Smart Export Guarantee tariff. Octopus Outgoing, EDF Export+ and others publish current rates. We'll guide you on which tariff suits your generation pattern and help you complete the paperwork. Export payments typically start 4–8 weeks after switching.

Save and earn — for 25+ years
Your bills drop immediately. SEG export payments arrive monthly. Performance is warrantied for 25 years on quality panels — most are still producing strongly at 30. Inverters typically need replacing once at year 10–15 (covered by their own warranty). That's it: no annual servicing required for most systems.
Documents and decisions before your survey
A few things ready before the installer's visit can shave a week off your timeline.
A recent electricity bill
So the installer can see your annual usage and tariff. Helps right-size the system.
A rough idea on battery
Battery yes/no/maybe-later changes the inverter spec. You don't have to commit — but say where you're leaning.
Loft access
Most installers run cables through the loft. Knowing it's clear saves them 30 minutes on survey day.
