Cookie policy
Last updated: 2 May 2026
This page explains the cookies and similar technologies used on Solar Panels UK. We comply with the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations (PECR) and the UK GDPR.
1. What cookies are
Cookies are small text files stored on your device by a website. We also use related browser-storage technologies — localStorage and sessionStorage — which are not technically cookies but are subject to the same consent rules.
2. Cookies and storage we use
| Name | Type | Purpose | Lifetime | Category |
|---|---|---|---|---|
solar_cookie_pref | localStorage | Remembers your cookie banner choice (accept / reject) so we don't show it again. | 1 year | Strictly necessary |
solar_lead_id | sessionStorage | Tracks your unique quote-form session so we can resume from your last completed step if you reload mid-form. | Until tab closed | Strictly necessary |
solar_lead_step | sessionStorage | Records which form step you last completed, for resume-on-refresh. | Until tab closed | Strictly necessary |
exit_intent_seen | sessionStorage | Prevents the desktop exit-intent modal from showing twice in one session. | Until tab closed | Strictly necessary |
_ga / _ga_* | Cookie | Google Analytics 4 — only set if you accept analytics cookies. Anonymous traffic measurement. | 2 years | Optional analytics |
3. Strictly necessary vs optional
The four "strictly necessary" entries above are required for the Site to function. They store your cookie-banner choice or your form progress; they do not track you across other websites and they are not used for advertising. Under PECR, no consent is required for strictly necessary cookies.
The Google Analytics cookies are only set if you accept analytics cookies via our cookie banner. They can be rejected at any time.
4. How to control cookies
You can:
- Click "Reject" on our cookie banner — this will prevent any optional analytics cookies being set.
- Clear your browser cookies/storage from your browser's privacy settings — this resets all preferences and you'll see the cookie banner again on your next visit.
- Use private/incognito browsing — most browsers do not retain cookies after the session ends in incognito mode.
5. Third-party tracking pixels
Once configured, the thank-you.html page may load tracking pixels from Google Ads, Google Analytics 4 and Meta (Facebook). These pixels are commented out in the source code at the time of writing — they will be enabled once advertising campaigns go live, and only after you have accepted analytics cookies.
6. Changes
We may update this cookie policy from time to time. Material changes will be highlighted on the Site for at least 14 days.
